Our team had a fascinating week in Panama working alongside the Secretaría Nacional del Ferrocarril (National Railway Secretariat – SNDF) as they advance one of the country’s most ambitious infrastructure programmes: the Panamanian Railway Corridor.
Designed to connect Panama City with the border of Costa Rica, this rail-powered logistics corridor has the potential to transform connectivity, support economic growth, and help build a more sustainable transport future for Panama.

Throughout the week, Felipe Castro Arenas, MICHAEL KILBY and Richard Threlfall joined colleagues from the SNDF, Grant Thornton UK, the UK Government and the wider advisory team in a series of workshops and technical discussions focused on the regulatory and institutional foundations needed to deliver a programme of this scale and ambition.
Drawing on international experience from major rail projects around the world, discussions explored governance models, regulatory approaches, and lessons learned, while recognising the importance of adapting solutions to Panama’s unique context and aspirations.

What stood out most was the level of engagement, ambition and commitment from the SNDF team. The openness of the discussions and willingness to challenge ideas created a valuable environment for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
It is exciting to see the vision for the Panamanian Railway Corridor taking shape, and we look forward to continuing to support the programme as it progresses into its next phases.
